Lords of fucking Thunder!!

Welcome to the realm of the nerd!  This week’s WMW- Wacky Music Wednesday comes packed with a bit of a history lesson of your’s truly. I like to consider myself a bit of an experienced metal head, even though I didn’t start out liking heavier music until my teen years. For most of my childhood I only enjoyed video game music. Yep, the blips and bloops of NES, computer and arcades were constantly stuck in my head. Humming those tunes would get me odd looks and smirks from other kids

This week’s wacky music Wednesday Jashua wants to share the story of when I became a man. Ok… woah (or whoa) not THAT story!  The story of when my mind was blown from hearing the songs of a video game!  It was the perfect metal gateway into the realms of Megadeth, Anthrax, Manowar, Pantera, and Testament!  This little known gem on the Turbografx called “LORDS OF THUNDER”  Just as the title suggests, you become Landis and battle demons, gods, monsters, orcs, and other metallic mythical creatures to the most perfect crunchy guitar solos ever heard.  EVER HEARD!! I MEANT WHAT I SAID!

The first freaking stage by default and the assignment was a desert wasteland with sand dragons and armed hell’s angels flying around. The accompanying crunchy guitars were the first song I heard in this incredible soundtrack and game. I had to literally pause the game and just soak in the music. Nothing draws you into a game like a perfect soundtrack!

 - Stage: Helado

Perfect for the ice caverns and mountain tops, I swear I could imagine demons and demigods shredding their dueling steel guitars from across the chasm!!  If these guitar riffs don't get your heart thumping, you apparently have no pulse!

 - Stage- Llamarada

This is the king of the entire soundtrack!  That intro bass line is unmatched. It’s been etched in my memory for the entirety of the last 30 years for me. If anyone shows me a funky blistering bass line in a metal song, I always come back to this like “Oh, yeah- well have you played Lords of Thunder on Turbografx?”... again with the odd looks and smirks…?

There are more songs that are all fantastic, but these three are my favorites. The soundtrack was written and recorded by an even more obscure group of Japanese developers/musicians that just go by the name “T’s Music”.. Like, Turbografx Music? Who knows, but they’re incredible!  Look up “Auzal Stage” music for another amazing bass line intro!

I hope you dug this edition of my nerdy WMW exploring strangely fantastic metal from a 30 year old game on an obscure af gaming platform! We’ll see you again next time! ❤️
