the afterlife

Welcome to the spiritual edition of your midsummer Wacky Music Wednesday! With recent events in my universe I am compelled to share a song that speaks a bit about spirits. I’ve had a few unexplainable (at least mostly unexplainable) interactions where I’ve heard and felt something from beyond our plane of existence. The methods of communication have been noises/voices from my living room and the knocking of items off of a shelf. Being the coward that I am, I’ve been fairly spooked anytime I hear or see anything move in my house now! Haha- good times!

The song we’re experiencing today is called “We used to live here” by the incomparable Dave Melodicka. Melodicka usually works in remakes/remixes with other popular songs and spins them in a way of synth or techno. Most of their work is in a fun variety with some really interesting twists and turns. Check out their cover of Ghost’s “Square Hammer” for something incredible!

But with “We used to live here” we have a haunting tale of the afterlife, spirits, and their dealing with being gone from this world. The song works magnificently because it flips the script on the age-old story of ghosts and haunting, and rather this time the house is haunting the ghosts which inverts the entire concept. I love it!

This song hits on so many different levels as I think everyone can get something out of it. Think of being caught in a moment that you relive over and over, kind of like muscle memory of trauma. Logically, we know we aren’t reliving the same thing over and over, but our bodies react as if we were from something as minor as a smell, or word, or a sound. Whether you feel you yourself are stuck in a purgatory status, or missing your place in life, just remember everything is temporary. You can get back, we can all succeed. And if you’re actually already dead and reading this, please don’t haunt me! PLZ!!
