Valley of Strathmore

Welcome back to this week’s WMW- WACKY music Wednesday!! I’m your WACKED out host- Joshua, and we’re gonna talk about some pretty cool songs today. Cool, and well SILLY!  How silly you may ask? Well, SUPER SILLY, like a Silly Wizard kinda Silly!!

100 years ago I worked in the coal mines with my grandfather, he would awaken around 4am and just after he’d scroll his MySpace feed he would splash a boiling coffee in my face to wake me up for our shift in the mines. I would shamble from my slumber over to the local 5am newscast which in between sports updates and weather news we would see these super cool infomercials.

One such ad was for the Grand Theater at the nearest town to the south of us, that had an upcoming show for this folk or celtic style renaissance act. I could only make out a few lyrics from some of the cuts, but for whatever reason those songs stuck with me for years.  My brain would often return to a few of them at random times of my life. Fast forward to within the last year, and I DISCOVERED this folk band and their music!!

The Valley of Strathmore by Silly Wizard

“But if time was a thing man could buy

All the money that I have in store

I would give for one day by her side”

I absolutely LOVE this part, it’s always gripped me. Maybe it’s just how I’m becoming more aware of how fast time is passing by, or maybe it’s something completely unrelated. I would give it all up to have time back. It’s beautiful.

Silly Wizard are actually a bit more serious than their name implies, because they have a long list of killer bangers that I would recommend to anyone that enjoys groups like Flogging Molly, the Dubliners, or the Pogues.

Check out The Queen of Argyll and If I was a Blackbird for instance!

“If I was a Blackbird” is another gorgeous slow moving tune that pulls your heart with every lyric. The songs feel like they would accompany such wonderful films like Braveheart or even The Princess Bride. Give ‘em a try if you’re ever in a renaissance mood, or if you just like folk music!

Thank you so much for humoring me and reading these, I really do appreciate you so much! ❤️ I hope the rest of your week is as amazing as you are!
