Slashers
We're quickly approaching the deadly haunting holiday and this Friday is none other than FRIDAY the 13th! What mystical magics from beyond the grave could have allowed this? I am your ghost (host?), Joshua and this week we're taking a dive back into 80's horror film soundtracks. Well... sorta. How about Synthwave/dreamwave for your delicate ears? After last week's beat down, I figured we should make a different approach and gently creep you out. What is this riverdance? Why even reference Riverdance?
What has become of me? The terrors of the unknown, a very John Carpenter toned vibe enters from the depths of hell... do you embrace it? Well, you should! I personally LOVE old horror/slasher flicks from my childhood. You know, those movies that you dug out of the scary movie bin at rental stores? VHS flicks like Halloween, April Fools, Friday the 13th... Wait.. That's just TWO DAYS AWAY!
How freaking cool would it be to just vibe at a slasher/cyberpunk concert like this? We should go!!
What were we talking about again? Oh yeah- WMW!! WACKY MUSIC!! It's Perturbator, and their incredibly unique take on synth vibe/techno/rock that pulls you into a world of classic 80s horror films. Combined in a rave setting you'd have no excuse but to float about like a victim waiting to be slashed to pieces by a hulking antagonist. Would you trip over your own feet trying to escape, or welcome the warm embrace of death?
I've been enjoying Perturbator for about a few years now and almost always go into my fall month's rotation on spotify. James Kent, the twenty-eight year old sole member of Perturbator, acquired an early taste for synthesizers. This interest was largely inspired by the fact that both of his parents were musicians in a tech trance band themselves. Though Kent never completely abandoned his soft spot for the vast world of alien synthesizers, he started listening to thrash, death, and black metal at a young age and even went so far as to play guitar in several black metal bands as a part of his first foray into the local music scene. Starting in 2012, however, Kent switched gears and started producing his own electronic music influenced by cyberpunk culture and John Carpenter.
If you'd like to check out more of their music, head into a rabbit hole of youtube videos, and if live performances aren't your thing- check out their album releases or official releases like this:
Thank you again for hangin' with me during this haunted experience, I'm sure we'll have much more spooky scary skeleton music to share next week, and remember- This is WMW - Spooky Ed. Joshua, signing off!!
