blip blip

Chiptunes hadn't had nearly as much exposure as it deserves in the hallowed halls of music history, certainly. So many incredibly talented artists, making songs for flash projects, games, and even just music to enjoy!  Wait? People just listen to chiptunes... like for fun?  HECK YES WE DO!!

Welcome back to another rendition of WMW- I'm your host, 7@5HU@ and we're diving in with the blips and bloops and jello pudd'n pops... I'm not sure I can make those references yet...... hold up- Ok, yeah, that was definitely not ok!  Well... speaking of drugging people, how about we get hopped up on goofballs with some rad af chippy tunes, that will be sure to tickle your earholes!

The climax of amazing chip music was during the 16-bit era nearing the end of the 1980s and heading into the early '90s. PCs and Gaming took major steps forward from the 8-bit Atari's and Coleco's of the world and creators were able to start creating sounds in programs that sounded "almost like real music!"  But who would've known that nerds in their late 30s and 40s would fall in love with that emulated sound creating an entire sub genre of techno music!

Pocket Tanks is a super fun original PC Game from the early 2000s that captured many ears due to it's incredible soundtrack, the nostalgia is very apparent. Those that enjoyed the game are quickly pulled back to these memories as soon as they hear 10 seconds into the intro song. This is true of any game/song/movie that you loved growing up if you think about it.

Taking it a step further, what if the game had been released a decade earlier on say the Turbografx or PC Engine?  early 2000s tech retro/covered by tech from 1987!?  What a neat concept, and it's becoming a concept that is growing in popularity. Popular songs (De)mastered with retro tech that is!  I think it's a fun idea that gives you nostalgic vibes through chiptunes. Merging one's childhood with current themes!

How about the Weeknd in 8-bit?

Damn, some incredibly talented artists out there working with crazy limitations on retro devices. I LOVE IT!!

One of the most talented bands/groups out there is Anamanaguchi, which were responsible for the classic Scott Pilgrim video game, and upcoming NETFLIX series that is sure to be rad as well!  I'd recommend checking them out for sure!

Thanks for czeching out this week's WMW, I hope you enjoyed this trip down nostalgic vibes.. Well, at least my nostalgia that is! 😉  Tune in next week as we take a leap of faith to another crazy direction as we head into the bitter cold months of hell... I mean, winter.  Be good to one another!!
