absolve

Gooooood morning fellow musak luverrrr!!

It's me, ya boy, fresh Joshua with a fun little tune for this week's WMW!

I discovered this track sometime last week and I've had it on repeat ever since (please send help). The song is called "Absolve" from Jacques, which seems to be some kind of French alt-pop. Now, I know what you might be thinking: "Ugh, French? Cringe" First of all, how dare you, Daft Punk are French. Second, yeah that was my reaction too, but damnit all if those Frenchies don't know how to make some fantastic tunes.  First they’ve mastered the perfect kiss, and now apparently my ear holes! 😉

The beginning of the song is very straight forward, with a very chill-pop aesthetic. From the first 30 seconds, you kind of get the feeling that you know where the song is going, but at the 45 second mark that really starts to change. Jacques' voice starts to loop, the music swells, and the entire tone of the song shifts from chill to something else entirely.

What the hell? I thought his voice was looping, but now we have this electronic cello playing? This was the moment when I knew this song was special; the seamless transition between his looping vocals into a beautiful string piece taking place over a tonal shift that makes you wonder if you're still listening to the same song. The rest song feels like a really unique journey, with a strong feeling of forward motion.

As we reach the end of the song, we hear a crying baby, which isn't normally something you would want in a song, but it has some sort of autotuning effect applied to it where it actually sounds... beautiful? Honestly not what I expected, but hey, this is WMW, anything goes. The song closes and I'm sure there's a significance behind the baby, something around the lines of the end of one thing is the beginning of another. Not sure to be honest, but it's a great way to close this already unique song.

I hope you dig this weird little tune as much as I have. I love unique music, and I feel like there is a lot more great French music to discover! I wish the best to you on this fine Wacky Wednesday! Peace outie 5000!!
