Requiem - A JJ2 post
At times there are needs for soothing vibes rather than edge crushed soul smashing riffs to fully get your brain set straight, and today Instead of a WMW, I will be doing a SM-HF-W A chill respite if you will! The INTERLUDES if you will 😉 (Soft music, headache friendly, Thurs... erm, Wednesday!
I love metal album interludes, something about them is just so beautiful. Whether it is the brief respite from the wall of noise and onslaught of brutality, or just the careful skill required to play these intricate pieces, they are almost always a treat to find in the middle of a great album.
Here's a few of my favorites.
Elevation Path - Beyond Creation. Man, what a gorgeous bass-centric song. Everything takes a sidestep to the hypnotic 6-string fretless bass that really gives a sense of exploration and mystery.
Gehinnom - Gevurah. Typically known for speedy and intense black metal, this interlude is almost completely distinct from the rest of the album aside from the eerie vibe the echo-y acoustic guitar brings. Honestly feels like it belongs more in a diablo game than anything else haha, hauntingly beautiful!
Konigsberg - God Dethroned. A little faster paced for an interlude, kinda gives the anxious feeling of being a WWI soldier hunched over in the trenches of France nervously awaiting the next artillery barrage. This song is not a interlude to relax to, but it's definitely a change of pace from the rest of the death metal album.
Requiem - Opeth. Come one, you didn't think we'd get through an interlude list without mentioning one of the GOAT of integrating acoustics with death metal. This one comes right before my absolute favorite song in Orchid, which is The Apostle In Triumph, and is honestly the perfect preceding song. A surprisingly gentle song from possibly the best progdeath band of all time!
I hope that this SM-HF-W brings you some comfort in these trying times. Fare thee well, and may many blessings be upon you. Tune in next week as I cut open a can of worms on what I consider the very GREATEST album of all times!! ❤️
Until next time….
