Gore out of Sherbrooke

What's that? Did I hear someone ask for a WMW on a slippery Thursy Thurss!!? I hope you're in the mood for some real esoteric stuff >:)

Our track today is 'Earthly Love' by Gorguts. Gorguts is a Canadian death metal group blast-beating their way out of the early 90's, paving the way for many future (weird) tech-death bands. Their earlier stuff was much more morbid angel-y, while their later albums were very unique, especially for the time.

This song in particular comes from their obscura album, which definitely leans towards the avant-garde side of music. It begins with a very eerie, high-pitched feedback that leads into a sudden opening, giving the listener the feeling that they were thrust into a chaotic landscape that has been chaotic for some time. The pandemonium slows for a short time to allow for something that sounds like a melody (and some super cool and atmospheric drum fills).

At around the 1:40 mark, we reach the focus riff of the song, which provides little relief from the general weirdness of the rest of the song. It feels dissonant, anxious, and frantic, and as soon as it begins it leads you right back into the flurry. A short while later, we are treated to a short string section, seemingly out of absolute nowhere. Is it beautiful or peaceful? Perhaps a refuge from the storm?

Hah!

Nope!

It's just as a distasterful masterpiece as the rest of the song.

Gorguts - Earthly Love

You feel as though you're being swept around in a storm, looking for something to hold onto. Each new element in the song just brings more dissonance, more craziness.

This all may sound like I'm bashing this song and don't like it, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I love this song! I think the constant uneasiness is refreshing, and very interesting to listen to! There's so much musical creativity in every second that it is a wholly unique experience, which I value very highly in music.

It's not easy listening and definitely not for everyone, and even for myself I only seek this out when I'm in the mood for it. But man, when you want something weird, Gorguts has your back haha.

Hope you enjoy this week's track!!! I'm General George Joshington, outa'ere!
