Wall of Sound
The very essence of music can move you to your core. It's a mystery on what sounds can chill you to goosebumps. Making your insides hum.
Experience Orbit Culture's "From the Inside" for example. Check the 2:55 portion. Overall this song has better than average ups and downs, transitions from styles of extreme to a comfortable hard rock chorus. But... damn, at 2:55 something changes. They take you on a journey from a sudden hush of violin to a completely overwhelming blast to your ears. It's horrible, beautiful, and painful all at the same time. The lyrics spell it out.
'AND IT ALL CRASHES DOWN FROM THE INSIDE
AND IT ALL CRASHES DOWN ON ME
YOU'LL SEE THROUGH ICE, BUT YOU CAN NOT REACH IT'
It's more than just hearing the vocals though. You are presented with a wall of sound that reaches into you and usher you along for the ride.
'Let there be light let there be moon
Let there be stars and let there be you
Let there be monsters, let there be pain
Let us begin to live again'
Devin Townsend may be the greatest music maker in the history of music, even if he'd never admit it. He'd never share a single opinion about himself that his fans have. We love him, and he doesn't understand why. He's about as ordinary as anyone could be. However, his thoughts and theories ARE in fact, incredible.
His album "Genesis" and this title track are a perfect example of this wall of sound theory. It mixes every genre of music imaginable into one track. At the 2:55 (There's that TIME AGAIN!?) dude's playing Space Invaders in a warm welcome to silliness, and then we're greeted with a powerful medley of wisdom, advice, and power!
The beauty found within music is also within yourself. What you need at this particular moment, and what you get are often similar things. Look for the signs, look for the monsters and through the pain. We will learn to live again!
I know music isn't a competition, but these guys win.
What are some songs you love that have a wall of sound that echoes the message contained within? I know of a few more, but we should all share to keep the conversation going! This has been Joshua, and this is your mid-week dose of Wacky Music!
