Rusty Cage - Road Rash
You really think I was cool enough to know what good music was in my teenage years? I mean seriously, if you've EVER read a single post from me here, you know that I was so out of the loop on popular or even GOOD music in the early 90s. I liked movie soundtracks sure, but I LOVED video game music. I was practically the only kid that was humming themes from Skate or Die 2 or Lords of Thunder rather than recognizing any song by Perl Jam or Beck.
Believe it or not, I was picked on in school for not knowing many hot-new songs during my early teens, and I likely even referenced it just like that.
"Hey dickface, do you even know this song?"
Me: I'm sorry, I don't keep tabs on the hot-new songs. Is this Guns N' Roses?
Ugh... I'd kick my ass too...
Then something magical happened! My friend got a 3Do in the summer of 1994, and we started playing games with 90's 'tude and soundtracks with REAL music!! The one I'm focused on today is Electronic Arts' 3DO release of Road Rash! The intro click above has the incredible "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden! I freak'n loved this game and it's soundtrack! Suddenly without even realizing it, I was into music that other kids were into!!There was a specific moment when my friend and I had grabbed some snacks and planned an all-night game night playing various 3DO games, and his older brother and his "COOL" friends walked in and hung out with us most of the night playing games and listening to the soundtrack. It was a killer gate-way drug moment that made me realize just how cool it is to connect to people through music. It opened up my interests to discovering cool music and helped shape my interests too!!
Gaming is cool, Music is cool. Your FACE is cool!! Be kind to each other out there!! <3 See you next time!
