Good sleepless night pt 2 -A JJ2 Post-

I'm going to tell you a tale of why I need the largest coffee the cafeteria offers this morning.

Around 1:30am last night I decide to go to bed, but before I did, I wanted to close the many tabs I had open (there's often more than 40 open at any given time, it's a problem) and I found one to be on Bandcamp. Sure, why not check out a band or two, I've been hurting for new music...

An hour and a half later I had accumulated 18 NEW TABS and lots of great, weird music, of which I will share with you today

'Light-Proof' - Inhumankind; Free form jazz, chorus, Barcelona

'Sea of Storms' - Swords of Dis; spiritual death-doom, England

When I heard the first 10 seconds of Light-Proof, my first thoughts went to the campy, kind of silly, accordion breaks in many Igorrr songs. I thought it a super interesting, kinda weird, one off way to start a song (FYI every song in the album is like this), starting with an almost jarring flute-double bass duet without any discernable time signature. You are given absolutely no time to process this, however, as immediately after you are thrust into a gorgeous choir paired with a slow piano and backseat double bass, vocalizing a somewhat eerie lyric-less melody.

"How quaint" You say to yourself, removing your monocle to clean it. The flute and double bass return a call-back of a smiliar, yet more complex melody, eventually joined by the piano playing the same. THEN THEY INTRODUCE HARSH VOCALS?! Over the choir and piano, they bring in death-metal style growls. How does this even work? It shouldn't... at all... but it so does.

The growled vocals with music that does not call for it at all brings this song from an interesting listen, to the song that I will be obsessing over for the next several weeks. Unfortunately, there aren't any lyrics available for this song, and the only ones I can audibly hear is 'living offering' and 'temple', and with an album named 'Self-Deification' we can infer some kind of not-so-good things happening (gives a little bit of Griffith from Beserk based on my hand-wavy interpretation lol).

This song is very, VERY artsy fartsy, but do not let that deter you! Absolutely give this a listen, it is one of the most interesting songs I have heard in recent memory!

Sea of Storms instantly drew me in with the album cover. Holy shit is that the coolest album art I've ever seen, and I'm a sucker for good album art. I mean, what is that thing?! Some kind of stoic Egyptian man camel?

Yes, it is that actually.

I looked it up, it's called a Buraq, and it is a traditional Islamic mythical creature that according to their scripture would accompany prophets on their journeys to places of great importance.

The female vocalizations in the beginning and throughout the song are not only hauntingly beautiful, but give it a spooky ritualistic sound, and boy am I here for the aesthetic. I couldn't find any lyrics for this song either, but you know what, I like it better that way, it adds to the mystery of the song.

Musically, the deathy parts of the song are very heavy and fun to listen to, not the most unique thing I've ever heard, but fun to headbang to, and when you add in the female vocals, it's just an all around great listen! Also the sound of the kick drum is incredible, and they use it very liberally, which I greatly appreciate.

I think this band is woefully underappreciated, they deserve more than 47 monthly listeners on Spotify. Just goes to show how much incredible music is out there that barely gets any attention, which is kinda sad, but also very fun to discover these little diamonds in the sea of garbage.

I hope you enjoyed today's WMW! I'm excited that I actually have some wacky stuff to share, and by god is this stuff wacky lol. But that's why I absolutely adore it!

Also! As I was writing this, I found another song that I want to make a late addition to this list:

'Ira Minervae' - The Vex Collection.

https://thevexcollection.bandcamp.com/track/ira-minervae

I won't dive into this one, but I encourage you to check it out, the first 30 seconds are unlike anything I've heard before!
