My Identity: Lorelei

 

Theatre of Tragedy's epic symphony had haunted my ears for decades, literally. The soft female vocals of the chorus beating with my heartbeat as I travel along this existence, some existence I say. Welcome to your perfect tune to get lost in the woods to, it's THEATER OF F'N TRAGEDY!!

Theater of Tragedy: Lorelei

Theater of Tragedy came in early with a symphonic blend to heavy music that they made their own early on. The feeling of being in an empty cathedral hearing booming guitars mixed with a choir of voices accompanying painful lyrics dashed with beauty. It was painful, it was sexy. It's rare a band could find such a connection with a specific audience, and man- I love this track. ToT has various lyrics that are repeated throughout their discography, and the meaning of Lorelei is interesting. The mythological siren of the Rhine River, whose song and beauty lured sailors to their death on rocks! 

Lyrics like "I speer thine pine, Ryking for me: Ryking for thee; Wistful, whistful - Chancing to lure" can be interpreted as "I seek your pain. Reaching for me, reaching for you. Wistful. Hoping to lure you in". This demonstrates the desire to be drawn in by something painful or destructive. 
This contributes to the gothic romanticism and themes of tragic allure often found in ToT's music, particularly on the album Aégis, where the song appears....
